OpenAI introduced Astra for Law, a new AI foundation for legal work that combines its latest model, GPT-6 Astra, with law-specific settings, tools, and context. OpenAI says the legal research index covers more than 230 million URLs and draws on case law from the Free Law Project's CourtListener. On a private validation set of 200 U.S. legal research questions from the Vals AI Legal Research Bench, Astra for Law passed an overall correctness check 54.0% of the time at the highest reasoning effort, compared with 38.7% for GPT-6 Astra using web search only. The platform first reaches selected law firms through the Trusted Access Program in ChatGPT and Codex, and is coming to the API, where customers including Harvey and Legora can build on it.
